Accession #: 784.20
Title: Flat Drawstring Purse
Object Type: Purse
Participants:
Campbell Family (collector)
Physical Description: Flat, vertically rectangular drawstring purse made from an off-white velvety fabric and heavily embroidered with a gold cord in a design that may Persian or near eastern. Drawstring is a gold metallic cord which passes through small, circular metal rings attached to the upper outside of the purse. Beads wrapped in a metallic thread with smaller dark orange beads on the end adorn the purse in several places. They hang from the bottom of the purse, on the corners and in the middle, and either end of the draw string in clusters of 3. Larger single beads of this style are found on either end of the purse where the drawstring passes through the rings.
Description: The Campbell family purchased a number of decorative art and costume items during their tour of the Middle East and Europe in 1904. This embroidered purse may have been one of them. Later, Helen Campbell and her cousin Hazel Lease were photographed in front of the Campbell's carriage house around 1910 wearing costumes that were likely among these items as well.
