Physical Description: | Indigo blue, rose and gold wool are woven in stripes over a background of natural colored cotton. A pattern of LeMoyne star, pomegranates, and double morning glory emerges through the stripes. The date 1857 is woven in diagonal corners. This coverlet is seamed in middle. |
Description: | Figured and fancy coverlets like this one were handwoven by professional weavers. They were especially popular from the 1830s through the 1850s. The mix of bright colors and varied patterns suited American decorative tastes of the time. The heyday of pieces like this ended with the Civil War. |
