| Physical Description: | Flat cotton sack printed "EXTRA FANCY HIGHEST PATENT RED WHITE & BLUE CHOICE HARD WHEAT BLEND FLOUR/BLEACHED MANUFACTURED BY SPOKANE FLOUR MILLS CO. SPOKANE, Washington, 49 LBS. RED WHITE & BLUE." One inscription states: "THE MATERIAL IN THIS COTTON BAG HAS 100 HOUSEHOLD USES. WRITE TEXTILE BAGS 100 NO. LASALLE ST. CHICAGO, ILL. FOR FREE BOOKLET". Another inscription identifies the bag as made by the Fulton Company of Minneapolis, MN. |
| Description: | Manufactured sacks made of cotton cloth were commonly used as flour packaging from the late 1800s to the 1960s. By 1900, when Spokane Flour Mills began operations, Spokane was said to be the seventh largest milling center in the United States. The company delivered flour all over the world before closing in 1970. |
