Physical Description: | Weathered wood-handled plow with wood cross pieces and a cast iron, right cut, plow blade. |
Description: | Emil Johnson purchased this plow at a hardware store on Spokane's Havermale Island in 1879. He needed six to eight horses to pull the plow when breaking sod on his Peone Prairie farm. A series of Homestead Acts from 1862 to 1916 allowed men, women and freed slaves, following certain requirements, to claim a federal land grant. There were residency requirements and in some cases a claimant had to promise to plant trees. The size of the tracts were increased over time to 640 acres. Thousands of settlers arrived in the Inland Northwest to farm, as a result of these Acts. |
