Electric Fuses

Electric Fuses - Breaker, Circuit
Accession #: 4.8
Title: Electric Fuses
Object Type: Breaker, Circuit
Participants:
Physical Description: A set of two electric fuses with porcelain partially wrapped in brass. There is a small round piece of brass on one end and patent dates stamped on the larger brass end.
Description: Electric lighting for streets and homes came to Spokane soon after hydropower technology was available; a power station was constructed at the falls of the Spokane River as early as 1885. By 1898, numerous large Spokane homes, including the Campbell's, were constructed with combination gas and electric lighting, with gas as backup during power outages. Although the Campbells brought both gas and electricity to each chandelier and sconce location, they appear to have relied on all-electric light fixtures, operating with knob-and-tube wiring, push-button light switches patented in 1895, and fuses like these, patented in 1882 and 1886.
