Title: | Double Nine Patch Quilt |
Object Type: | Quilt |
Participants: | |
Physical Description: | This quilt is composed of forty-nine pieced blocks that alternate with solid cream-colored blocks. The quilt contains a variety of fabrics including madder browns, bubble gum pinks, tan colors, and overdyed green. Each pieced block contains five smaller nine-patch units. There are three borders: 1" green, 4 1/2" white, 3/4" green. It is hand quilted with ten stitches per inch. The quilting designs include triple diagonals, double cross hatch, and parallels. The backing is made from coarse off-white cotton. |
Description: | This quilt's coppery brown fabrics support its family oral history indicating an 1860s Indiana origin. The green fabrics were probably made by first dying the fabric yellow, then dying it a second time in blue (or the process may have been reversed). |
