Description: With no vaccine option, contagious diseases like diphtheria, whooping cough, scarlet fever, tuberculosis and measles spread rapidly. Physicians were to report cases within twelve hours and post quarantine notices. Diphtheria claimed victims with high fever and suffocation when swollen membranes closed the throat. Spokane's Dr. Wilson Lockhart produced an antitoxin serum that helped patients endure the illness. In 1923 a vaccine ended the deadly claim of the disease.
