Physical Description: | Decanter, squared flat glass form with elaborate hand painted polychrome crest or coat of arms motif centered by a unicorn in shield in a Continental/Italianate style; mushroom-form stopper has matching hand painted decoration. |
Description: | Although Grace Campbell was said to be a "temperance woman" and likely did not drink alcohol, it was not uncommon to still serve wines and cordials during dinner parties. Certainly, tea, coffee, cocoa, water, mineral water, lemonade, punch, and even ginger ale and root beer were popular. Whether or not spirits were served, an array of elegant drinking vessels and decanters, like this elegant hand painted one, were on display in the china cabinet and on the sideboard. |
