Physical Description: | Copper and gold mineral sample, Butte Mine, Orient, Washington. |
Description: | The discovery of silver and lead ores deep below ground fueled a 1890s population boom - and led to violent labor disputes that twice resulted in martial law in North Idaho's Silver Valley. In nearby Spokane, the Chamber of Commerce recognized mining's immense economic role by displaying more than 100 regional ore samples at its headquarters - and donating the collection to the Museum in 1919 and 1941. |
