Physical Description: This quilt is made from silk cigar bands. The horizontal bands of this quilt have been basted to a black cotton backing and are feather-stitched together. The cigar bands contain many notable names: "Meet Me in Seattle 1909, Sacajawea, Spokane Leader." The bands are 3/4 to 1 inch in width. The lengths vary, with an average length of 13 inches. The lower 14 inches are unfinished and basting stitches remain where the feather stitching has yet to be added.
Description: During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the American cigar industry grew significantly, even including numerous Spokane area factories. Hand-rolled cigars were tied into bundles using low-quality silk ribbons as advertisement. The brightly-colored ribbons also inspired needle workers to collect and incorporate them into decorative display quilts and pillows - a popular handicraft that lasted until about 1910, well after paper bands began replacing the ribbons.
