Physical Description: | Silk ribbon cigar bands in shades of gold from nearly 40 different brands of cigars were used to create this quilt. There are eight blocks composed of cigar bands, with many having Spokane in their titles. Black feather stitching adds a decorative touch; the quilt has a rayon border and backing. |
Description: | By 1880 cigar smoking was America's favorite form of tobacco use; until 1900 cigars sold in bundles tied with silk ribbons stamped with brand names. Michael Luxenburger clerked for three downtown tobacco shops, and his family made this cigar ribbon quilt (including several Spokane factory brands) with black feather-stitch decoration. Tobacco companies also lured women with cigarettes, packaged with printed silk squares for home decoration use. Progressive reformers pressured the Washington State Legislature to ban cigarettes briefly in 1893, 1907, and 1909. |
