Physical Description: | This unfinished quilt top is made up of six pieced blocks, each of which is divided into sixteen squares. The pattern in each of the sixteen squares is identical; The overall design of the quilt top emerges from the way the squares are placed. Each square has a blue print quarter circle in one corner, with four light red checked triangles and five blue print triangles. The light red checked fabric print makes up the rest of the square. The top is bordered on two sides with a blue inner border and a light red checked print. |
Description: | Florence Preston probably pieced this top in Wisconsin. By repeating and rotating a single pattern block, she created a complex design using just two fabrics. For marketing purposes during the 1930s, editors often gave new exotic names to traditional quilt patterns; this one became known as "Chinese Fan." |
