Description: | Charles Edenshaw (birth name: Da.a xiigang; 1839-1920) was an influential Haida artist from Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada known for his woodcarving, argillite carving, silver and gold engraving and painting. His masterful handling of the form line design system led to a huge demand for his bracelets among Native people up and down the coast. "Totems to Turquoise," American Museum of Natural History, New York (AMNH website, 5/7/2013) The design on this hat resembles a dogfish design that was known to be the family crest of the artist's wife. authority: Robin K.
