Chandelier

Chandelier - Chandelier
Accession #: 3692.20
Title: Chandelier
Object Type: Chandelier
Participants:
Physical Description: Chandelier had six arms (three electrical and three gas). Luminaria removed the gas jets 5/93 so there are now only three arms. The remaining arms extend off the centerpiece in a "v" shape to upright bulbs covered with shades. This fixture is presently in the yellow bedroom of Campbell House.
Description: Electric lighting for streets and homes came to Spokane soon after hydropower technology was available; a power station was constructed at the falls of the Spokane River as early as 1885. By 1898, numerous large Spokane homes, including the Campbell's, were constructed with combination gas and electric lighting, with gas as backup during power outages. Although the Campbells brought both gas and electricity to each chandelier and sconce, they appear to have relied on all-electric light fixtures in each location. By 1920, Mrs. Campbell had replaced the original yellow guest bedroom sconces with Colonial Revival candle-style fixtures and possibly kept the earlier chandelier.
