| Physical Description: | One of a set of six matching wood framed chairs (784.56-784.61), each with four square wooden legs that flare slightly outward near foot; brass and wood casters on foot of two front legs. Seat is D-shaped with flat side at front. Chair back is T-shaped with inward curves making up the stem of the T and connecting the seat to a rectangle top. The chair back is slightly vertically concave. |
| Description: | The "Oriental" style was well established in wealthier homes before the 1983 Columbia Exposition popularized the "exotic East," and home furnishings began to feature Moorish-style designs. This chair is one of six used around the game table in Amasa Campbell's den, a room featuring Moorish-style burlap wallcoverings, stenciled ceiling designs, and pierced brass light fixtures.This chair bears its original silk brocade upholstery, a Middle Eastern pattern in red, green and gold on a dark blue background. A fabric sample also exists on the Campbell's 1898 decorator's plan (L2011-16.9). |
