Physical Description: | This quilt is made of two fabrics: A pink and white shirting print and a cream-colored solid. The pattern gives the appearance of white octagons floating in a sea of pink. There is a 4" solid cream border. The quilt is hand quilted in diagonal lines at 8 stitches to the inch The only machine work appears to be the stitching together of the back panels. The edge is hand stitched, with the back turned to the front. |
Description: | Kate Wordly Brook McCrea (1874-1956) used just two fabrics to make this "Bow Tie" quilt. Kate was born in Minnesota, but moved in 1885 to Spokane, where her father, Henry Brook, became a prominent banker. Kate married William Stone McCrea in 1895 and apparently lived the rest of her life in Spokane. "Bow Tie" was a popular patchwork pattern in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. |
