Title: Bengali Quilt
Object Type: Quilt

Physical Description: The white cotton fabric in this quilt is embroidered with silk thread. Examination of the backing with a 10x lens indicates that the embroidery was worked by hand, using a backstitch, at 15 to 16 stitches to the inch. The quilt is 92" long and 95" wide. The central medallion of the quilt is 15 ¾" in diameter. It consists of eight wedges with identical floral motifs. This is surrounded by five rings of varying widths with different floral motifs. The total diameter of the central medallion and five rings is 43". This 43" circle is surrounded by medallions and smaller motifs in straight rows. All the motifs in this quilt are botanical. The edges are bound with cotton tape.
Description: Research suggests that this quilt was made in Bengal during the seventeenth century. It was probably exported to either Great Britain or the Netherlands and then brought to colonial Massachusetts. The family of David Lynde Huntington likely brought it to Spokane around 1900.
