Bellows

Bellows - Bellows
Accession #: 4429.29
Title: Bellows
Object Type: Bellows
Participants:
Physical Description: Fireplace bellows. Two triangular wooden panels form both handle and body; one panel carved with face of man with moustache and beard; the other plain. The carved panel connects to the plain panel with a leather hinge (broken) at the narrow end of triangle, near a long brass nozzle. The two panels are also connected by soft leather sides, tacked to the wood with pyramidal brass or copper tacks. Inside the body of the bellows, a bent sapling gives shape to the soft leather. All leather is completely deteriorated.
Description: Although hot water circulated through pipes below brass floor grates in the Campbell's Library, Dining, and Reception rooms, fireplaces in these rooms (and in 2nd floor bed chambers) provided critical additional heating, as well as ambience. This heavily carved bellows, the only extant Campbell original, reflects the family's taste for carved furniture and Black Forest-style music boxes. Bellows were essential tools at each of the house's nine fireplaces and a bellows of this style appeared in a c.1908 Dining Room photograph. By 1916 the family had extended a central hot-water radiator system throughout the house.
