Beaver Fur Scale - Scale
Accession #: 285.2
Title: Beaver Fur Scale
Object Type: Scale
Participants:
Physical Description: Forged iron balance scale with hanging chain and hook, balance arms with drop hooks, and a hand hold bottom center; used for weighing beaver furs prior to baling them.
Description: At Spokane House the Hudson's Bay Company used this scale to weigh furs before encasing them in canvas waterproofing for the long canoe journey east. Fur traders had built this trading post in 1810 at tribal fishing grounds on the Little Spokane and Spokane rivers; the post moved to a new site at Fort Colville in 1826. The fur trade opened the door to increased exploration and settlement- by missionaries, military, travelers, and scientists.
