Physical Description: | Beaded purse with no lining and a beaded drawstring. The beads are gold, pink, red, and green. The background is gold beads with a repeated pattern of red lined pink flowers and green stems coming up from the base. The fringe is pink and red and the drawstring is pink, red, and gold. There is a decorative beaded lip. |
Description: | This beaded bag (and 9 other objects in the Museum Collection) arrived on the "Merci Train" in 1949. The train, a gift from France, contained 49 boxcars, each filled with gifts to the people of the United States from the people of France - in thanks for the 1947 American Friendship Train that had carried $40 million in relief supplies to France and Italy. Each of the 48 states received one boxcar, with one final boxcar shared by District of Columbia and Territory of Hawaii. Washington state's boxcar is on exhibit in Yakima's Sarg Hubbard Park. |
