Object Type: Assemblage

Mamie Rand (collector)
Physical Description: A framed mixed media element with small bird baskets made from recycled materials and other items is surrounded by six wooden bird houses, each inscribed with a word like "faith" for example.
Description: Artist Kathryn Glowen tenderly memorialized her friend Mamie Rand in a series of artworks that explore memory and time - then toured the art in an exhibit named after Mamie's pet store, Petland. Mamie nurtured all types of living creatures, from goats to cats to lizards. She even lined old kitchen strainers with flannel to serve as nests for tiny songbirds' eggs, an act captured in the assemblage Baby Bird Bassinet. In addition to the art she created from objects in Mamie's house, Glowen preserved letters and business records documenting Mamie's life and business.
