Physical Description: Navy blue wool skirt, part of Red Cross nurse's uniform.
Description: Gertrude McKernan wore this uniform and earned victory and service medals as an American Red Cross Nurse in France during World War I. Trained at St. Luke's Nurses School, she later worked nearly 40 years for the Spokane Health Department. The Inland Northwest produced few supplies during World War I, in contrast to later World War II defense production. However, newspapers encouraged food and fuel conservation and war bond purchases. Women's Red Cross groups knitted and sewed garments for troops and welcomed those passing through the area.
