Physical Description: Metal souvenir stand, promoting Spokane as the "Hub of the Inland Northwest" and "Light Metals Capital of the West." Stand appears to be aluminum and, without joints, is bent into its easel shape with a shallow lip at the bottom. A simplified map of Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana is shown above the name "Spokane" and has a yellow heart in the center highlighting Spokane's geographic location. Back of stand associates it with P.A.A. Convention, June 24-28, 1946.
Description: Created for a 1946 convention, this aluminum souvenir promotes Spokane as the "Hub of the Inland Northwest" and "Light Metals Capital of the West." New electrolytic process discoveries in 1888-1889 made aluminum extraction cheaper, and companies like Pittsburg's Alcoa formed immediately. By the 1940s, plentiful power from Grand Coulee Dam supported Inland Northwest reduction and rolling mills to supply high wartime aluminum demand. Industrialist Henry Kaiser acquired the facilities in 1946, and Kaiser Aluminum grew to involve all phases, from mining to product manufacture.
